1. Quick start guide

1.1 Before you start

Please properly reboot your device after installing or updating any large app. Press and hold the Home and the Sleep/Wake buttons for approximately 10 seconds until the Apple logo appears. Don't slide to power off, that would be the wrong way to reboot.

Be shure to use headphones or loudspeakers, since the iPhone's internal speaker cannot convey the sound quality and starts clipping very early.

1.2 Playing on the keyboard

To adjust the size and the position of the keyboard, make a slide or a pinch gesture on the menu bar.

If you want to change the labels on the keys, press the keys button and switch between the 4 key label modes with the right button in the bottom menu.

If you just want to play around with the instruments, switch to the instrument tab, select an instrument (the list is scrollable), preview it and switch back to the keyboard tab to play.

You might want to get fancy with the effects: switch to the effects tab, choose an effect, switch it on, and preview it while playing around with the settings.

1.3 Recording a song

Follow these steps to create a song from scratch:

1. Projects tab: tap New to create a new project

2. Tracks tab: go to the beat screen and set the tempo and the signature.

3. Instr tab: select and configure the first instrument

4. Keyboard tab: press record, wait for the precount to hit 1.1 (precount can be disabled in the beat screen) and play your piece, then tap stop.

5. If you made a mistake and want to re-record, simply tap the undo button to erase the notes you just recorded.

6. Switch to the tracks tab to review what you just recorded. The track can be edited bar-wise (sequencer) and note-wise (piano roll editor), more on that in the tracks tab section.

7. Tap the plus icon to create a new track. The keyboard and instrument tabs always apply to the active track, so make shure that track 2 is selected.

8. Repeat steps 3-5 to record on the second track.

8a. Let's assume that your song has a duration of 20 bars and you want to start recording at bar 10. Move the left marker on the ruler to the 10th bar and recording will always start from there.

9. Effects tab: tune the reverb, maybe set the equalizer and play around with the other effects.

10. Projects tab: enter a project name and tap the Save button.

11. Suppose you want to have a wav file of the song on your Mac or PC. In the projects tab, select your song and press export. Then press the Server button and enter the URL in your Mac's or PC's browser (the devices need to be in the same WiFi network in order for this to work). Simply click a file to download it.

1.4 Getting the most out of your device

Complex songs can really demand every bit of CPU performance the iPhone/iPod Touch has to offer. There are several tweaking options for you to prevent stuttering/lagging:

- Latency (Setup tab):
Set it to low for a responsive keyboard and to high for preventing stuttering at playback of complex songs.

- Polyphony (Setup tab):
Low values will dismiss some notes at playback at the benefit of stutter-free playback on earlier devices.

- Reboot:
Please properly reboot your device after installing or updating any large app. Press and hold the Home and the Sleep/Wake buttons for approximately 10 seconds until the Apple logo appears. Don't slide to power off, that would be the wrong way to reboot.

Besides that, using less effects and lower release times also greatly benefits performance.
On the iPhone 3GS, the 3rd generation iPod Touch and later devices, Xewton Music Studio runs much smoother than on earlier (pre-3GS) devices.
