Controlling a Yamaha DGX 650 with Music Studio from iPad Air

Postby vbdx66 » Fri Aug 25, 2017 3:55 pm

Hello,

I have a Yamaha DGX 650 digital piano with an arranger section and I'd like to use my iPad Air and Music Studio to control some of the keyboard parameters.

For instance, I'd like to assign each individual part of a "style" (an automatic accompaniment pattern triggered by playing chords with the left hand on the keyboard) to an individual MIDI channel in order to control each part, for instance to mute the drums or the bass or whatever, or to adjust each part's volume.

A specialist on Yamaha keyboards has explained me that in order to achieve this, I would have to send the MIDI data of each MIDI channel to a track in my DAW (in this case, Music Studio), then apply the desired MIDI control changes (e.g. muting a track or adjusting its voulme), and lastly, send back the MIDI data from the DAW to the keyboard.

Before buying Music Studio, I'd like to know whether I can achieve this. I wanted to try this out with Music Studio lite, but unfortunately this version does not allow me to tes external MIDI hardware...

And: before someone asks, I connect my keyboard to the iPad via the Camera Connection Kit and it works flawlessly with other apps like Korg Gadget or Yamaha Synth Book.

Thanks for helping.

I would have to send the MIDI data of each MIDI channel to a track in my DAW

Music Studio can route MIDI channel 1 to track 1, channel 2 to track 2 and so on if you set the MIDI input channel to "tracks" here:

then apply the desired MIDI control changes (e.g. muting a track or adjusting its voulme)

Music Studio only supports a few MIDI CCs, and it doesn't record CC (or volume) automation.
It's on the list of feature suggestions though: viewtopic.php?f=12&t=2409

send back the MIDI data from the DAW to the keyboard

Music Studio only sends a handful of MIDI event types, which are listed here:
